Trump Invites Loved Ones of Shot National Guard Personnel to the Presidential Residence
President Donald Trump stated on Sunday that he has asked the loved ones of a Guard member fatally shot last week to come to the executive mansion.
He noted that he contacted her family and they were “devastated”.
Background on the Tragic Incident
Specialist Beckstrom, 20, was lost her life in a violent incident on Wednesday in the nation's capital.
Her fellow service member, US air force staff Sgt Andrew Wolfe, 24, remains hospitalized in critical condition.
Vigils across West Virginia have occurred in their remembrance.
Presidential Offer
The commander-in-chief explained he’s discussed a visit to the White House for the families of both soldiers of the state Guard.
“I told them: ‘When you’re prepared, because that’s a difficult moment, come to the White House. We’re going to recognize Sarah,” Trump addressed the press. “And similarly with Andrew, whether he recovers or not.”
Public Support
Mourners gathered over the past few days at the high school in West Virginia to honor Beckstrom.
Both they had been serving with the West Virginia National Guard as part of the president’s government program to support public safety in DC.
Honoring Sarah Beckstrom
“Sarah was the individual that educators desired. She conducted herself with quiet strength, a contagious smile and a positive energy that encouraged those around her,” the principal, the principal of her former high school, informed the Associated Press. “She was sweet, considerate and always eager to support those in need.”
Memorial arrangements for Sarah are still being arranged.
Legal Measures and Policy Adjustments
Officials have indicted a 29-year-old Afghan national with one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder while carrying a weapon.
The tragedy led the administration to pause asylum applications and temporarily stop granting visas to holders of passports from Afghanistan.
Condition of Wolfe
The airman, a native of Martinsburg, started his military career in early 2019 and is a graduate of Musselman High, according to the Associated Press.
He continues to receive treatment and is “fighting for his life”, the state’s governor Patrick Morrisey stated on television.
The state’s top lawyer Bondi stated on a news show that she also intended to visit the family.
Legacy of Sarah Beckstrom
Sarah, from Summersville, graduated from Webster County high school in 2023 and joined the military shortly after, working as a law enforcement officer with honor, per the military.
“She had a lot of goodness and she definitely had bravery,” Morrisey addressed the crowd at the memorial. “Though her life ended too soon, she has created a legacy that’s going to be remembered always.”
