The Latest Casual Game Mode Ignites Intense Debates Over Bots, Experience Points, and Queue Times

Recently, Battlefield Studios launched a new playlist called Casual Breakthrough. In essence, this mode resembles the regular Breakthrough format but includes a few key adjustments:

  • Every squad has only 8 human participants, with the remaining filled by 32 bots.
  • Actions performed by human gamers award complete experience points, while AI activities provide reduced XP.
  • Only two maps can be played: Cairo Siege and Empire State map.
  • Elements like Player tags, accolades, and career stat updates are disabled.

So essentially, this mode delivers on its name: it offers a laid-back take of Breakthrough. On the surface, you might think there's nothing wrong, as it gives more options for gamers looking for alternative methods to enjoy the game. But, gaming history have taught us anything, it is that you can't please everyone. In other words, many Battlefield 6 fans are mad.

Player Responses: Anger to Support

"People want real players. Avoid making the mistakes of your competitors," states one reply to the mode reveal. "Truly disappointing idea," says a different user. Meanwhile, in community forums, one user notes, "I have no idea where we are going with this title," while someone else details all the issues they consider to be problematic in the game: "Fix bugs, fix drone glitch, fix IVF rockets, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, improve hit detection. We do not require this AI-heavy playlist."

However, for every complaint, there are players explaining how much they're enjoying the recent addition. "It's very fun to warm up, human participants keep it from being a complete grind but it's quite laid-back," says one Reddit comment. "This subreddit doesn't understand that there are players who actually go outside and can't play this game all the time. Allow them to find a middle ground," adds another. A response on Twitter clarifies that as they're "a battledad with limited time, this is perfect for me," while another applauds the mode for "avoiding intense competition."

Constructive Criticisms and Player Input

All that said, players have valid points to criticize Casual Breakthrough. A few folks have pointed out that it will make queue times even longer for different playlists because of the sheer number of playlists currently available. On a similar note, certain regions already encounter AI-filled matches in the existing playlists. Additionally, it appears somewhat counterintuitive that the mode does not begin without a minimum number of real players, even though it focuses mostly on fighting AI opponents.

Finally, a major complaints is that Battlefield Portal was promised to provide complete rewards, even against bots, but that got canned when they attempted to remove XP farming from the mode. So this new playlist seems like the player base compromising in the middle, as per a Reddit comment. Another labels this mode as the developers "dropping the ball significantly, I experienced great enjoyment in the initial release, why did they feel the need to adjust it?"

Looking Ahead: Adjustments Be Made?

If Battlefield Studios has proven anything to date with Battlefield 6, it's that they're paying attention and responding to player input. Assignments being too difficult were adjusted very quickly, just like the specific battle pass objectives. Chances are that, should analytics shows this recent mode isn't performing to their expectations, they won't be shy to change it again.
