Our team is checking video footage and photographs posted earlier today that purport to show the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive blast that authorities in Russia say killed a senior soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed of his injuries. A probe is currently ongoing.
The initial step to check the location of where the images originated relied on posts saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby residential complex captured in the footage.
Locating other structures, lamp-posts and the street layout verified the exact location the footage were taken.
We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not been manipulated.
