Biden Bowl, Any Takers? Italy's PM to Auction Off World Leaders' Gifts for Good Cause
Getting rid of undesired gifts might be seen as a little discourteous – unless it's done in the proper manner.
A Charitable Auction
Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, will offload a reported 270 presents received by her by world leaders while abroad. The eclectic collection reportedly features items such as a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gold heels.
The presents, together, have an approximate value of €800,000. They are scheduled to be put up for sale to the highest bidder by a Italian art dealer. The specific date remains to be announced, although the aim is to hold the auction by year's end, with the proceeds donated to non-profit organizations.
Palazzo Chigi Treasures
The items are said to be stored in a repository on the third floor of the prime minister's official office. It has been reported that Meloni furthermore intending to auction off gifts received by her preceding prime ministers that have been gathering dust for years.
The full gift list remains disclosed, but partial details emerged earlier this year when a comprehensive document of items received was presented in parliament. The question raised if a legal value limit was being followed. Legally, a prime minister must declare presents exceeding €300.
A Global Array of Presents
Among the items:
- A silk accessory from the leader of Albania, allegedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A traditional Kerala dress from the Indian leader.
- A set of adornments from the Slovakian president.
- A fine china tea service and a selection of wines from Hungary's leader.
- A pottery dish from the ex-American leader.
- A tablet from the leader of Ukraine.
- Artworks from the Moldovan government.
- Various other items including makeup, a skateboard, and numerous carpets from trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Maybe the strangest gifts were the statuette from Milei and the exotic footwear," reports suggest.
Political Backdrop
Supporters have applauded Meloni, mostly from within her party, with building relationships with foreign leaders and re-establishing Italy as a prominent force on the international platform once again.
This unique auction represents a unconventional way to deal with the state presents that are collected during a political career.
