American flight controllers are more and more seeking second jobs and reporting ill, as they continue to work unpaid amid the federal closure, the transportation secretary has announced.

"These professionals are wearing thin," the official informed a news outlet on the weekend, as some flights were halted on the Californian coast due to staffing shortages.

Following the federal closure on October 1st, air traffic controllers, who are considered essential workers, were instructed to keep doing their duties uncompensated.

But some have been missing, causing terminals to stop or slow their plane traffic, which has exacerbated delays due to climate and other issues.

More than three thousand American flights were delayed on Sunday, and Duffy stated he anticipates the situation to grow worse.

"I am seeing the stress," Duffy said in an discussion on Sunday Morning Futures, noting that he had spoken to several controllers to listen to their worries firsthand.

"They're taking side jobs, they're out there looking, 'Can I work for Uber, can I find another source of income to make ends meet?'" he continued.

The secretary added that on the previous day twenty-two notifications at airfields indicated travel would be held up due to a shortage of workers - among the peak after the shutdown started.

The US government shutdown reached its twenty-sixth day on the weekend, making it the second-longest halt in history.

Duffy has repeatedly warned that aviation regulators would slow down the quantity of aircraft in the sky if there is a shortage of security staff.

In his conversation, he declined to respond straightforwardly when questioned if it was secure to fly in the United States, and instead issued a personal plea to controllers.

"I require my controllers focused on the flight paths, not on the monetary matters at home," the official stated.

On that day, certain flights were stopped at Los Angeles International Airport due to staffing shortages, causing disruption at the fifth-busiest terminal in the country and among the most crowded in the world, as well as additional travel extending upward to the city of Oakland, California.

The FAA notice was issued at 8:45 AM in the morning on the weekend. Numerous trips were back on schedule before noon.

Flights at Newark Liberty International Airport, though, were delayed an average of over an hour due to personnel issues, and the FAA indicated Dallas Fort-Worth, the second-busiest airfield in the US, could experience problems from reduced staff later in the day.

The agency warned passengers in California to check with carriers about updated flight schedules.

The issue precedes the third match of the championship, which is due to be played in Los Angeles on Monday night, and approximately four weeks prior to the Thanksgiving break, among the peak times to fly in the United States.

Pressure on US air travel contributed to ending a government shutdown in two thousand nineteen. Back then, the halt had entered its fifth week and disrupted flight services, including pilot training.
